About This Opportunity
The Software Engineers will be responsible for working collaboratively to develop tools and services to manage and publish large datasets on OpenStack cloud infrastructure. The position will work with external agencies including state and federal government agencies and other partners.
TERN is an Australian Government research infrastructure initiative to enhance Australia’s environmental research effort, particularly in the area of changes over time in ecosystems. TERN coordinates a national grid of field observation, sensors and remote sensing, which collectively provide open access data for researchers and other users in Australia and globally. TERN was established in 2009 by a National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy (NCRIS) grant from the Australian Government Department of Education, Skills and Employment (DESE) and receives co-investment from state governments and partner institutions. Through a number of extensions and renewals of its grant, TERN’s project funding is currently in place until June 2023.
TERN’s head office is at the Long Pocket precinct of the University of Queensland (UQ) in Brisbane and it partners with many other universities across Australia and CSIRO in delivering its research infrastructure project.
Key responsibilities will include:
  • Collaborate within teams to design and develop applications to process/analyse large datasets in cloud environments;
  • Analyse user requirements and design software solutions to meet user needs;
  • Maintain existing codebase and applications, and peer review code changes;
  • Work in a cloud infrastructure to develop and host applications;
  • Work in an agile environment to continually deliver value to customers;
  • Present work at conferences, workshops, project meetings and other forums;
About You
We are looking for experienced and highly motivated Software Engineers to apply their knowledge and expertise in frontend (React), backend (Python) and databases (RDBMS, NoSQL) to solve data management and analytic problems in the earth and environmental science domain.
  • Tertiary qualification (IT, computer science, data science, software engineering or related field) with work experience in software development;
  • Experience in Linux/Unix, Python, React, JavaScript, CSS, and databases (RDBMS and/or NoSQL);
  • Experience in developing APIs and working with API endpoints;
  • Ability to acquire new knowledge and skills;
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team;
  • Good understanding of software development lifecycle and agile development methodology;
Desirable
  • Knowledge and/or Experience in DevOps (Ansible) and container (Docker, Kubernetes) technologies;
  • Knowledge and experience in working with spatial data.
  • Experience working in the research and education sector.

What We Can Offer
We have 2 full-time, fixed-term positions available, through to June 2023 at HEW Level 6. These positions have the possibility of extension past the end date, subject to funding extension outcomes known next year.
These positions will commence in January 2023.
The full-time equivalent base salary will be in the range $82,399 - $88,503 plus super of up to 17%. The total FTE package will be in the range $96,407 - $103,549 per annum.
